LGBTQIA+ Presence at Nonprofit Conferences Isn’t Enough Anymore

Dear nonprofit conference leaders,

Over the last few years, I’ve watched LGBTQIA+ presence at nonprofit conferences grow significantly.

More Queer speakers. More Pride meetups.  More DEI panels. More affirming language.

And honestly? That visibility matters!

For a long time, many LGBTQIA+ nonprofit professionals were navigating conferences (and this sector overall) without seeing themselves reflected in leadership, programming, or professional spaces. So yes, increased representation is progress.

But I think we’ve reached an important turning point in the nonprofit sector: LGBTQIA+ presence at conferences is no longer the goal.

Now we need to ask: What are we actually doing with that presence?

Because visibility alone does not transform a sector.

Presence Is Not the Same as Power

A conference can feature LGBTQIA+ speakers and still avoid LGBTQIA+ strategy.

It can celebrate Queer professionals socially while excluding Queer perspectives operationally.

It can host a Pride networking mixer while still failing to meaningfully address:

  • LGBTQIA+ donor engagement

  • Queer-inclusive fundraising practices

  • LGBTQIA+ leadership pipelines

  • nonprofit workplace culture

  • board diversity

  • Trans inclusion

  • community partnership strategies

  • or the realities LGBTQIA+ nonprofit professionals navigate daily

Representation matters. But representation without integration becomes symbolic very quickly.

And nonprofit professionals, especially younger Queer professionals, can feel the difference.

The Shift I’m Seeing

What excites me most right now is not simply that LGBTQIA+ people are present at conferences.

It’s that more of us are beginning to shape the actual conversation.

Not just: “how to be inclusive”

But:

  • how LGBTQIA+ communities influence philanthropy

  • how Queer leadership reshapes workplace culture

  • how identity impacts donor trust and engagement

  • how community-centered fundraising creates stronger systems

  • how authenticity changes leadership itself

That shift matters. Because LGBTQIA+ perspectives are not side conversations in the nonprofit sector.

They are leadership conversations. Fundraising conversations. Governance conversations. Culture conversations.

Many nonprofit conferences still treat LGBTQIA+ content like a specialty track instead of a sector-wide competency.

That’s a problem. Because LGBTQIA+ engagement is not limited to LGBTQIA+ organizations.

Every nonprofit:

  • hires staff

  • recruits volunteers

  • engages donors

  • builds boards

  • creates partnerships

  • develops workplace culture

Which means every nonprofit is already interacting with LGBTQIA+ communities whether they realize it or not.

The question is whether they’re doing it intentionally… or accidentally.

Conferences Are a Reflection of the Sector

Nonprofit conferences often reveal where the sector currently is. And right now, I think we’re in a transitional moment. The sector has largely accepted the importance of LGBTQIA+ visibility.

But it is still learning how to operationalize LGBTQIA+ inclusion into:

  • fundraising strategy

  • leadership development

  • governance

  • workplace culture

  • and long-term organizational growth

That’s the next evolution. That’s where the real work begins.

What I Hope to See Next

I want to see LGBTQIA+ conversations integrated into mainstage conversations, not isolated from them.

I want to see:

  • LGBTQIA+ fundraising sessions treated as fundraising strategy, not niche content

  • Queer professionals recognized as sector experts beyond LGBTQIA+ topics

  • more Trans and BIMPOC LGBTQIA+ leadership represented visibly

  • organizations investing in year-round competency, not conference performativity

  • and more honest conversations about power, culture, and belonging in nonprofit spaces

Because the goal should never be to simply include LGBTQIA+ people in the room. The goal should be building a sector where LGBTQIA+ professionals can influence the room.

As a Queer nonprofit professional, consultant, fundraiser, speaker, and entrepreneur, I’m grateful to see LGBTQIA+ visibility growing across the sector.

But I’m even more interested in what comes next.

Not rainbow branding. Not performative inclusion. Not symbolic presence.

Real influence. Real strategy. Real leadership.

Because LGBTQIA+ presence at nonprofit conferences shouldn’t just change who attends.

It should change how the sector thinks.
